The Zurich Marató Barcelona and the eDreams Mitja Marató Barcelona open registrations for 2023. The two most international and two of the most important races in the country announce the opening of their registrations together. The aims are to return to the pre-pandemic participation numbers by recovering the traditional dates, to continue breaking circuit records with the participation of the best international elite athletes and to have, edition after edition, more and more participants in this great running festival of Barcelona, the best city in the world.

Both, the Zurich Marató Barcelona and the eDreams Mitja Marató Barcelona, have two very fast courses, with their own character and identity. Moreover, for its diversity and cosmopolitan culture, Barcelona has been considered this year as the best city in the world of the Telegraph Travel ranking. Having recovered some normality, the aim of these two great athletics events is to recover international positions and to consolidate themselves in the list of great marathons and half marathons in Europe towards the 2023 edition.
Mauro Llorens, director of the Zurich Marató Barcelona and the eDreams Mitja Marató Barcelona, says that “we are very excited about the next eight months. The organisation will give our 100% to have the best marathon in the world’s best city”.

Likewise, David Escudé, the sports councillor of the Barcelona City Council, points out that “with the recovery of the dates of the Mitja and the Marató, we not only recover the sport calendar of Barcelona but we also regain the heartbeat and the muscle of a city that supports sport and running. I am sure that 2023 will be an excellent year for sport in Barcelona, where races like the Mitja and the Marató will come with more strength and energy than ever”.

Two record-breaking races
The Zurich Marató Barcelona and the eDreams Mitja Marató Barcelona are two record-breaking races. Apart from being one of the most international races, the organisers want to keep increasing the female presence and setting new records again. The eDreams Mitja Marató Barcelona accumulates two consecutive editions setting a new male record, which is currently under one hour in possession of Haftu Teklu (59.06), 33 seconds faster than the previous record that himself got in 2021.

Also, since 2019, the Zurich Marató Barcelona has broken three records in the last three years. The last two were achieved last May when in the men’s category Yihuniligne Adane (02:05:53) and Gebru Redahgne (02:05:58), first and second respectively, lowering the 2021 record set by Samuel Kosgei (02:06:03) in 10 and 5 seconds, and Meseret Gebre Dekebo (02:23:11) lowered the 2021 record set by Tadu Teshome (02:23:52) in 40 seconds.

Back to the traditional dates
After two years of transition to overcome the Covid-19 pandemic, the organisers of these two races want to put this chapter behind and return to the traditional dates. As a prelude and preparation for the great challenge, the 33rd eDreams Mitja Marató Barcelona will take place next 19th of February in 2023, celebrating the 10 years that the online travel agency sponsors and gives its name to this race.

One month later, on 19th of March in 2023, the 44th Zurich Marató Barcelona will take place. It will also be the 40th anniversary of the first time it was run on an entirely urban course, in 1983. Year after year, and especially for the next edition, this race wants to be more and more sustainable, diverse and inclusive to continue making history.
